Changing the filter sand is a simple process, once you know the basics.

Parts of a Sand Filter

1.  Flange Clamp Design allows 360° rotation of valve to simplify plumbing.

2.  Integral Top Diffuser ensures even distribution of water over the top of the sand media bed. Full-size internal piping gives a smooth, free-flowing performance.

3.  Unitized, Corrosion-Proof Filter Tank molded of tough, durable colorfast polymeric material for dependable, all-weather performance with only minimal care.

4.  Efficient, Multi-Lateral Underdrain Assembly with precision engineered, self-cleaning 360° slotted laterals gives totally balanced flow of sand.

5.  Integral Molded Drain Plug for easy draining of tank, without the loss of sand.

6.  Totally Corrosion-Proof Base is rugged and attractively styled to provide strong, stable support.

To change the sand in your filter:

 1. Turn off pump and place filter valve in the "closed" position.

 2. Loosen screws on flange clamp and remove clamp.

 3. Lift filter valve off filter tank and set aside.  Make sure that the o-ring on the bottom of the valve remains in place.

 4. Remove drain cap from the bottom of the filter and allow filter to drain completely.

 5. Remove the old sand.  Be careful not to bend the pipe sticking up from the sand.  You can dip the sand out by hand or use a shop-vac.

 6. Once the sand is removed, check the stand-pipe and multi-lateral underdrain assembly (laterals) to make sure  they are in good condition and have no cracks, holes or splits.

 7. Rinse the inside of the filter tank with water or a solution of water and bleach.

 8. Replace the filter drain cap at the bottom of the filter.

 9. Make sure that the stand-pipe is straight and the lateral assembly is properly seated.

10. Cover the top of the pipe with a cup or rag.

11. Fill the filter tank with water to just above the lateral assembly.

12. While holding the stand-pipe steady, slowly pour the new sand into the filter tank.

13. After filling with the proper amount of sand, remove the covering from the top of the pipe.

14. Replace the valve onto the filter tank.  Make sure the o-ring on the bottom of the valve remains in place.

15. Secure the flange clamp, attach any loose hoses and set the valve to the backwash position.

16. Backwash the filter 3 to 5 minutes (or until the water in the sight-glass runs clear).  This removes any small particles that may be found naturally in the filter sand.

The filter is now ready for standard operation.
